Tonic

Privacy Policy

Tonic collects nothing.

Effective October 4, 2026 · Last updated November 1, 2026

In short

Tonic runs entirely on your iPhone or iPad. It has no account, no analytics, no ads and no network connection of any kind, and it never sends anything anywhere. The microphone is used to hear your instrument in real time. That audio is processed on the device and thrown away, unless you choose to save a recording. Apple's App Store privacy label for Tonic reads "Data Not Collected," and this policy agrees with it.

Information collected

None. Tonic does not collect, store or transmit any personal data, usage data, analytics or device identifiers. There's no account, no login and no profile. As the developer, I have no way to see how you use the app, because nothing about your use of it leaves your device.

Microphone

Tonic asks for the microphone to do its job. The Tuner, the Key/Chord Finder, Listen mode in Practice, and the Backing Band's Follow Me and live chords analyze audio in memory, in real time, on your device. None of it is saved or sent.

The Recorder and Looper are the exceptions. When you tap Record, Tonic captures audio until you stop. You then choose to keep it, which saves it on your device, or delete it. A recording leaves your device only if you tap Share and choose where it goes yourself.

You can turn microphone access off at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.

What stays on your device

Everything Tonic remembers is stored on your device and never transmitted:

  • Settings: your instrument and tuning, sharps or flats, reference pitch, mic sensitivity and similar preferences.
  • Custom tunings you create.
  • Practice history: streaks, minutes practiced, best tempos for each drill, and the lessons you've finished.
  • Recordings you save, loops you mix down, and songs you import from Files, with their names and folders.
  • Backing Band setups: the bands and progressions you save, your mix, and the setup you used last.
  • Metronome settings: tempo, meter, accents and practice options.
  • Songs: the progressions, keys, tempos, lyrics and notes you save.

All of it is removed when you delete the app, and none of it is ever visible to me.

Third parties

Tonic includes no third-party analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services, and no third party is involved in the app at all. Apple handles the purchase itself.

Children

Because Tonic collects no data from anyone, it collects none from children. There are no chat, social or account features for any age.

This website

tonictune.app uses no cookies, no analytics and no tracking scripts, and it doesn't ask for anything about you.

Two outside services are involved in showing it to you:

  • Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it keeps standard server logs, such as your IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser type, to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse.
  • Google Fonts supplies the site's typefaces. When a page loads, your browser requests the fonts from Google, which receives your IP address and browser details to send them.

I don't use either to identify or follow anyone. If you email me, I see your address and what you write, and I use them only to reply.

Changes to this policy

If this policy ever changes, for example because a future feature needs a network connection, the date above will be updated and the change described here. As of that date, this policy describes everything the app and this website do.
